Maybe you've heard this statement right before a picture is snapped: "Do the Heisman!" When Desmond Howard struck this pose in 1991 after receiving the famous Heisman trophy, he had no idea that fans would still be doing it several years later, and that it would become as iconic as the award itself. Howard explains the phenomenon, "When I crossed the goal line that day in 1991 and struck the Heisman pose, I had no idea fans would still be emulating it 20 years later," said Desmond Howard. "To this day, people ask me to strike the pose for photos. After all these years, I'm happy Nissan is giving me the opportunity to turn the tables and see what innovative ideas fans will create."1 Nissan also seems to be inspired by the famous pose, they recently held a contest featuring it.
The "Innovate the Heisman Pose" Contest, which ran from November 21, 2011- December 14, 2011, challenged football fans to imitate the famous pose in amusing and creative ways and to submit these photos to Nissan U.S.A.'s Facebook page. The winner, Kalomo Jacobs, received a trip to the BCS National Championship game by using computer graphics to make himself into a Heisman trophy. The 4th place winner, "Rooftop Heisman," won two tickets to the Discover Orange Bowl in Florida, the 3rd place winner,"Doin' the Des on Les," won tickets to the All-State sugar bowl in New Orleans, and the 2nd place winner, "Bridesmaids for Heisman," is being sent to Glendale for the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.
